Disarm ICE
ICE was mistakingly made an armed force. We can fix that.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is an armed federal law enforcement agency because its mission, established after 9/11, involves enforcing immigration and customs laws, investigating transnational crimes, and protecting national security.
We must move to disarm ICE. There is no logical reason for them to be armed. ICE has egregiously abused their police power. ICE is not ever shot at. If they were and were disarmed, they should stop what they are doing and call the FBI, DEA, or ATF, and state, and/or local police to take care of their safety.
Congress has the authority to disarm ICE. ICE is now requiring officers to carry weapons for their safety. While ICE can apprehend dangerous individuals involved in terrorism, human trafficking, drug smuggling, and other serious offenses, they do not need to be armed for most of these roles. They can take an FBI agent or SWAT team with them if needed.
The FBI, DEA, and ATF agents have most of that mission. ICE acts as Homeland Security’s primary investigative and enforcement arm, and their redundant ENFORCEMENT role is abused. Their armament stems from their broad authority, similar to other federal police, to use force when necessary to carry out arrests and confront threats. Their training is seriously deficient in force escalation protocol.
This arming them largesse is not called for. Arming ICE was a snap decision made under extreme 9/11 duress. We did not know right after 9/11 what was needed. We do know now. An armed ICE is a gross overreach that gets innocent people and bystanders killed needlessly. Stop that! This is not working.
Why ICE is Armed?
Post-9/11 Mandate: ICE was created under the Homeland Security Act of 2002 to consolidate immigration enforcement, giving it broad powers to protect homeland security and public safety.
Broad Law Enforcement Powers: ICE has both civil and criminal authorities to enforce federal laws related to immigration, customs, trade, and national security.
Investigative Role: Through its Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) directorate, ICE investigates serious transnational crimes like terrorism, human trafficking, cybercrime, and financial fraud. (If this required armed agents, the appropriate agency should be consulted.)
Enforcement Operations: The Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) directorate arrests and removes individuals who undermine community safety or immigration integrity, necessitating the ability to use force against resistant or dangerous subjects. (Where this requires arms, the appropriate agency should be consulted, I believe.)
Officer Safety & Public Safety: Agents are trained to use necessary and reasonable force. This should exclude deadly force. It does not. (That is a mistake. When facing imminent threats of serious bodily harm or death, prioritizing the safety of themselves, the public, and those being arrested should mandate calling in trained agents of the FBI, the DEA, or ATF.)
Why not an Unarmed Force?
In essence, ICE should function as an unarmed federal police force focused on immigration and customs. However its officers are allegedly armed to fulfill their “dangerous” duties effectively and safely. Give me a break! Their duties are not that dangerous.
Seeing ICE in body armor with long guns facing unarmed protestors is inflammatory and unnecessary. It looks absolutely asinine. There are no circumstances where pulling out a gun to stop or shoot an immigrant or protestor are warranted. Drug interdictions may warrant calling in the FBI just like IRS agents do for a raid. That seems to be the proper protocol. Confronting peaceful protestors with thugs in military assault gear is outrageous. Simply outrageous.
Gross Overreaction and Overreach
In the Minneapolis ICE debacle, there is a reason ICE’s first action after the shooting was to extract and then hide the ICE shooter. This shooter, I presume, was poorly trained, tested, and qualified. He failed in using required force escalation protocol. (Step 1 is not Ready, Aim, Fire 4 times.) I would try to hide deficient training also. Superiors are implicit and liable in assigning an unqualified agent to duty.
My opinion is that the shooter should not have been armed. None of these assigned ICE agents should be armed for peaceful protests. Have we lost our minds? This is bullshit.
Who gets to make the call?
The citizens of Minnesota will decide whether this shooting was legal or murder. I know what I saw in the video; however, no one’s opinion will hold sway over the Minnesota citizens selected and convened in a grand jury. If indicted by that grand jury, the follow-on jury will decide justified or homicide. Let Minnesota get on with it. Where is the DA?
An Escape? Oh, no!
Who cares if a wily immigrant escapes capture? We can’t shoot those escapees. Who cares if a smuggler escapes entrapment? We can’t shoot them for that. And for your information, ICE is not shooting these individuals. ICE is shooting peaceful protestors who are exercising their 1st Amendment rights. That is what I see.
Disarm ICE!
We made a mistake arming this poorly trained ICE cabal. We can do something about this. Disarm them. Take Jim Bob’s gun away. Call your representatives and senators.

---> ICE is shooting peaceful protestors who are exercising their 1st Amendment rights. That is what I see.
That's exactly what I see, too.
They are recruiting thugs with guns at this very moment. Who would sign up for an unarmed thug force? It just doesn't have that juicy thug appeal, even with the money being offered.
You make a good and logical argument. Unfortunately, in thug circles, logic does not lead. Just another opportunity for Males Behaving Badly.
